How to Geotag Photos in Lightroom Classic
Step-by-step: geotag photos in Lightroom Classic with the Map module β manual pin drop and GPX tracklog Auto-Tag β plus what to do when you don't know where a photo was taken.
Lightroom Classic's Map module is a capable geotagging workspace β for photos you can place on a map. You either drag thumbnails to a pin, or load a GPS track log and let Lightroom match timestamps to coordinates. Both methods are well-designed and, if you already live in Lightroom, mean you don't need a separate tool for the photos you can locate.
Two things worth knowing before you go looking for the Map module:
First: it is Lightroom Classic only. Adobe sells two apps both called Lightroom. Lightroom Classic is the desktop catalog application with a full module bar β Library, Develop, Map, Book, Slideshow, Print, Web. The other, simply called Lightroom, is the newer cloud-based app. Only Classic has the Map module. The cloud version can display photos with existing GPS, but it has no Map module, no GPX import, and no way to add coordinates. This has been requested by users for years; as of mid-2026 it has not been added.
Second: Lightroom can only tag locations you already know. The drag-to-map method needs you to find the place on the map. The tracklog method needs a GPX file you recorded at the time. Lightroom has no AI and no inference β it cannot look at a photo and work out where it was taken. For photos whose location you don't know, come back to the section at the end of this page.
TL;DR: Use the manual pin for a handful of photos you can place on a map. Use GPX Auto-Tag for a full trip where you ran a tracker. For photos from before you had a tracker, or trips you can no longer place, skip to the final section.
Opening the Map module
Click Map in the module picker at the top of Lightroom Classic. The workspace becomes a world map (backed by Google Maps). Photos already in your catalog with GPS coordinates appear as pins.
If the module picker doesn't show Map, check Window > Panels β modules can be hidden there. If you don't see a module picker at all, you're in the cloud Lightroom, not Classic.
Method 1: Manual pin
Drag thumbnails from the filmstrip onto the map. This is the right method when you have a handful of photos and can find the location on a map yourself.
Find the location. The search box in the top-left of the Map module works like Google Maps β type a city, landmark, or address and the map jumps there. Zoom in to the exact spot, whether that's a specific beach access point or a particular intersection.
Select and drag. In the filmstrip, select the photos you want to place β click one, shift-click a range, or Cmd/Ctrl-click individual frames. Drag the selection and drop it on the target spot. Lightroom immediately records those coordinates for every selected photo.
For a batch of photos from a single location β all the shots from one afternoon in the same village, for example β selecting all of them and dragging together assigns the same coordinates in one operation.
Write to the file. Lightroom saves GPS to its catalog, not automatically to the original file. To push it into the file itself, select the tagged photos and go to Metadata > Save Metadata to File(s) (keyboard shortcut: Cmd+S on Mac, Ctrl+S on Windows). Do this before exporting or moving files, or the location will only exist inside Lightroom's catalog.
For JPEG, TIFF, PSD, and DNG files, GPS is written directly into the file. For proprietary RAW formats β CR2, CR3, NEF, ARW, RAF, and others β Lightroom writes to an XMP sidecar file with the same name in the same folder. Any XMP-aware application reads the coordinates from the sidecar. If you move or archive the RAWs, keep the sidecars alongside them.
Method 2: GPX tracklog Auto-Tag
If you recorded your position during the shoot β a phone tracking app, a GPS watch, a handheld logger β Lightroom Classic can match each photo to your position at the moment it was taken, by timestamp. This handles large batches efficiently: one tracklog, one click, hundreds of photos tagged.
Load the tracklog
Choose Map > Tracklog > Load Tracklog and select your GPX file. Lightroom accepts GPX only. If your device exports in another format β FIT (Garmin), KML (Google Maps Timeline), TCX (running watches) β convert to GPX first using a free tool like GPSBabel.
After loading, the track appears as a coloured line on the map. Photos in the filmstrip whose timestamps fall within the track's time range are highlighted.
Set the time-zone offset
This is the step most guides omit, and it's the most common reason Auto-Tag produces wrong results.
Your camera's internal clock may have been set to your home time zone while your GPS device recorded in UTC, or you were traveling across multiple time zones and one device didn't update. Even a one-hour mismatch shifts every tagged photo by tens of kilometres if you were driving or flying.
Choose Map > Tracklog > Set Tracklog Time Offset. A dialog shows the track timeline and your photos. Drag the offset slider until a photo you can visually confirm β the first shot at the airport, the hotel entrance β lands on the right position along the track. Once the offset is correct, all the other photos fall into place.
Auto-Tag
Select the photos in the filmstrip, then choose Map > Tracklog > Auto-Tag Selected Photos. Lightroom matches each photo's DateTimeOriginal timestamp to the nearest GPS point in the track and writes those coordinates. The photos appear as pins on the map.
Then save to files: Metadata > Save Metadata to File(s).

When you don't know the location
Both methods above require an answer you already have. The drag method needs you to find the place on the map. The tracklog method needs a GPX file that was running during the shoot.
If you are looking at a folder of photos from before GPS tracking was part of your workflow β old DSLR shots, scanned prints, photos from a borrowed camera β Lightroom's Map module has nothing to offer. It is a writing tool, not a discovery tool. It does not look at what is in a frame and reason about where it was taken.

- In Lightroom Classic, tag everything you have tracks for or can confidently pin on the map.
- Filter for photos still missing GPS.
- Export those to a folder.

- Re-import into Lightroom. The unknown photos now have locations.
